The Howard Government has not shared the dividends of the mining boom with all Australians. While John Howard claims that ‘working families have never been better off’, his government has made working life harder, with IR laws which take away overtime, penalty rates, holiday pay and other conditions. Labor believes that everybody deserves a fair share of the economic boom. Labor values fairness and social justice and will put these principles back into the heart of decision making about the national economy. HEALTH Labor will work with the states to provide an extra $2 billion to take the pressure off hospital emergency departments and provide more resources for preventative healthcare, mental health and acute care. We will also invest in dental services so Australians can access the dental care they need. EDUCATION Labor believes in fair access to university for all. We will abolish domestic undergraduate full-fee degrees. We will also cut the cost of maths and science degrees to assist students who want to study these vital disciplines. WORKPLACE LAWS Labor will protect the wages and conditions of working Australians. We will repeal WorkChoices, abolish AWAs, restore the independent industrial umpire, and provide unfair dismissal protection for all workers.
