Australia
is no longer the international leader it once was. John Howard
took us into an illegal war in Iraq, we have reneged on the
Kyoto protocol, and the United Nations has given Australia
a ‘C’ for its human rights and foreign aid record.
Under John Howard, Australia has lost its independence,
reputation and standing on the international stage. Our engagement
as an international citizen is at a low ebb. |
INTERNATIONAL COMMITMENTS
Labor
will ratify the Kyoto Protocol and the UN's Declaration on the
Rights of Indigenous Peoples. We will commit to the interim Millennium
Development Goal of 0.5% of Gross National Income in development
aid.
ASYLUM SEEKERS
Labor believes that when people fleeing persecution
reach Australia, that persecution must end. We will abolish indefinite
mandatory detention, Temporary Protection Visas and the Pacific
Solution.
IRAQ
Labor will withdraw Australian troops from Iraq.
We know that it’s possible to retain a strong alliance
with the US without being a US puppet on the international stage
and we are committed to making Australia a good regional neighbour.
A RUDD LABOR GOVERNMENT: LEADING AUSTRALIA AS
A GOOD INTERNATIONAL CITIZEN. |
